Got my Motorola Mask!!
Sweeet! This thing is excellent.
First thing I did when I got home tonight was install it. It's a little tricky to install, it's a little loose in the case and you have to push the CRT firmly in so it expands and locks in, the mask is a little sticky so it's a bit difficult to get the CRT to slide into the mask with it in the cabinet. I solved this problem with a little water based lubricant (i.e. KY jelly or equiv) applied to the mask, this lets the tube slide around but it shouldn't deteriorate the rubber. I placed the cabinet face down on a table with a rag under it, I pressed firmly down on the bell of the tube and tightend the clamp. (tip, fire the set up before you start mark the center line of the tube, this will make it much easier to get the picture level without having to pull the chassis several times like I did) Many thanks to Blacksmith, you should be able to sell a few hundred of these! |

Got mine today. Completely acceptable. Guess I better dig into restoring the TV chassis...

That mask looks great! I must get one before Christmas so I can show off my VT-71 to the guests, along with the in-progress-now RCA 8" mini-portable.

How bad can these masks get?
This bad!
Found this old picture of my set as I got it, the melted rubber pretty much covered the entire screen, there is still some residue inside the cabinet today. |

I don't think that was an original mask. I've only seen a couple, but one was still pliable, and the other one had turned to cement. If one turns rock-hard, how can another melt like that. I would guess that the melted one was a repro that somebody made up from a material that didn't like heat. I tested my repros with a heat gun. I got it so hot that I couldn't touch it without feeling pain, yet it did not get tacky or softer. |

I've seen a number of originals that ended up looking like a Dali painting. Fortunately, most of mine held up better than average, but they're all candidates for replacement by now.

I remember a pair of these sets in a local antique mall a few years back and both looked similiar to Eric's picture.
