More $3000 hogwash
The B.S. is spreading.
Obviously this seller has seen the other "auction" and is trying to cash in. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...&category=3638 "This set is featured in many books on the history of television as one of the greatest sets ever made" Does anyone have that book? I've read a lot of books on radio and television history and none I've ever seen has talked about any certain set being "the greatest"...in fact it would be rare to find a history book making such a claim about a certain product.
A book might claim "One of the first", etc. One of the few sets I remember specifically seeing in a history book is a glass set that was demonstrated at the 1939 Worlds Fair. In any case the ebay seller's claim sounds like hogwash to me. |

This seller made the mistake of not offering it to the "high bidder" of the first set for his current bid. Although we all know he wouldn't bite for half that amount

Well I'm no TV nut but my guess is that $3,000 figure refers to the what the set cost in 1949 adjusted for inflation in todays dollars. I wasn't alive in 1949 but I can't see a TV costing $3,000 in 1949 dollars.

That's a more realistic price. he's even recanted that 1949 $3000. price tag. After some consultation he figures it was $149.00. That is a bit low for a DuMont even in 1949. This guy has to do his homework.

This one's still only $100, can't understand why.
Look closely at the back on this one, it's supposed to be flat but it looks like it's been hammered outwards to accomodate a longer CRT. Probably a 12LP4 instead of the 12JP4. Maybe that explains the $3400.00 lower value.
