I wonder a bit about the history of your CTC5? How did you find it and was much restoration needed....sorry if I missed earlier posts on it ..but it is such a good looking set!

Thanks for your interest. This is the 2nd of this model I have owned. I purchased this one from the original owner, here in Los Angeles, some 15 years ago. The solid maple cabinet was and remains in absolutley original condition. The chassis was given a total restoration last year by Forum member Steve K. The original picture tube (21AXP22A) had been replaced by the original owner with an updated 21FBP22. The RCA operating manual was included with the set.

It is wonderful how some people look after their things. I wonder how many CTC5 user manuals still exist!

...or for that matter how many CTC5s were actually sold?

RCA had a tremendous advertising campaign for the CTC-5 models. And color programming, at least on NBC, was evident most every night. CBS also aired a fair share of color shows. I think RCA,the main producer, and other manufactuers, sold a good number of color sets in this '56-57 period. A recession in '58 and the general decline in color shows that followed, really slowed sales. It wouldn't be until around 1962-63 that sales would again start to climb again. However, it wouldn't be until 1966, that RCA would show a profit from color tv sales

I also collect Life magazines, and leafing through them you can really see the push in 56-57. Mentions of things like "this is the year" for color tv. I have a '5' which I suppose will be the oldest color set I ever own; they really did a lot with the technology that was available to them.

The earliest of my color tv advertisments from the National Geographic is November 1955 ....it must have ben part of the push for Christmas 1955...oh dear I was all of one month old!
