I just bought my first tube color set, its a RCA CTC5D. It is the blonde set with the tuning and volume contols on the side and it has legs. The owner insisted he plug it in and show me it worked the last time he used it ( in the 70's). Well, it came right up! the screen lit and there was sound out of the speaker. I get it home and pull out the chassis and there was one cap completely blown up. I do already understand that it will have to be totally recapped and resistors checked before I try it again . I noticed on the flyback that it had leaked wax a long time ago since it was dust covered. So it had been hot . It also has a rubber case around it.Now, should I consider it bad or can I save it. If so how?
I have worked on radios for years but this will be my third tv so I want to get it right. My first tv was destroyed by a flyback fire.

Flyback may be good. In fact it probably is good. Many flybacks will drip some wax but it does not necessarily mean it is bad.
I like to look for signs of charing and burning and a burnt smell in the HV cage. If the crt is good I would restore the chassis and cross my fingers that the flyback is good. If it turns out to be a bad flyback, I am sure someone on Ak will be able to point you in the right direction to obtain a replacement. Good Luck

You will want to test/set the horizontal efficiency so that the circuit is drawing the lowest current possible. I often have forgot to do this. The CTC-5 can be a tricky machine; there are several things about these that were not done before or since. On mine the power transformer bled a lot of wax over the years but the flyback looks fine.

As you noted, the HV winding on that flyback is covered by silicone rubber, which should be fine. The lower voltage parts of the flyback were wax coated. If there are any wax staligtights, clean them up. Carefully trim or melt them off. But don't worry about a bit of dripped off wax. The fact that the TV powered up with a raster pretty much proves your flyback is OK.
