Well, since the guy recieved a frankenstein to work with I can't fault him. The guy that put a modern stereo in it though should be shot.

That's kinda cool, but would be better if that was a replica cabinet instead of a real one.

Ya know, I'm not into the idea of fishtank conversions. However, I kinda like what they did here. Yeah, go ahead and shoot me... I'm sure someone's hair just stood up on the back of their neck.

I'm not saying that i myself would have done this tv conversion, and I certainly don't encourage it, but I'm glad they did a TV instead of a fishtank!

Ya gotta remember- many people don't realize old radios and tv's can be repaired. When I talk to people about this hobby, they are stunned to learn I get parts... even new parts for these old sets. I'm sure most of you have had the same conversation with others. Anyway, people get these items and at least recognize the craftmanship in the cabinet. They don't want it to go to waste. Seriously now... can you blame 'em? They end up trying to do something with it, and while we've all seen some pretty bad hack jobs, now and then someone comes up with something good. I think this particular conversion is good.

However, as I pointed out, I myself wouldn't have done this.

Arrrrrgh ! Just looking at it, methinks that might have been one of the more rare 10, 12, tube Zeniths...Oh, well...

No, it's a common 7-tuber, one of Zenith's cheaper models that year. Cute cabinet, though. This is from Sonny Clutter's website, radiolaguy.com .

Yeah, I've always felt it's all right to modify a set that's already been ruined. And sometimes they're even past suffering that indignity.

I'm probably getting a little off-topic from vintage TVs here, but I spotted this radio in the recycling depot yesterday. They say "you can't save 'em all" and sometime that's true; this one just looked too far gone to even consider.

Was that a Wards "Airline" with a "movie dial" by any chance?

I'd have grabbed the Philco, but I don't know why! Hard to give 'em away in that condition. I already have several in rough shape up in the attic. I also have some empty cabinets up there that would be good for something, though I don't know what.

Seeing that Philco does encourage me to hit the local recycling center more often. Nothing like this has shown up yet, but you never know.

I'd of too. Sometimes the ugliest of things turn out to be fairly easy to restore. And I wouldn't feel bad if I didn't succeed.

Evil thought: Install a wide screen HDTV display in one of them...

I would have at least left with a pocketful of tubes and knobs. Speaker, too, if I'd had my Leatherman tool handy. Some eye tubes are scarce and expensive, although a plain-Jane set would be less likely to have a magic eye.
