Does Anyone Know How You Would Correct This Problem?

This rather expensive set on Ebay has a picture that is stretched horizontally across the screen making it blurry:

Once again, an issue like this wouldn't make this worth anywhere near what it's being sold for. I'm just wondering if it's a pretty easy fix.

Looks like a vertical problem. Could be a cap or tube type problem. Its hard to tell because its so dark. If it looks stretched it could be due to low voltage blooming. Could be just needs a full setup....some kid turned all the knobs on the back for fun.

I think the seller is a regular here and knows a bit about sets.

That should be an easy fix. Prolly a tube. I think that is a very rare set and is worth repairing.

That is indeed a nice set, That user has a couple of others one being a Zenith Hybrid which is working, but wants waaaay to much money and on top of that, a very expensive shipping price.. I doubt they will sell for that...

The price has been lowered to $74 BIN, not all that out of line for this set I don't think, if you can pick it up.
Philco's of that type don't turn up often.

I'm telling you. This guy is gonna have to keep lowering the prices or they're not gonna sell. A set with a vertical problem like this isn't even worth $74. But if you're willing to pay that much, by all means take it.

Otherwise, great set. Definitely worth it.

So is this pretty much the last year for "Philco" or is it badged "Philco-Ford"... Is that why the set is so desirable?

Vertical problem, also it looks like there is no luma, just the chroma, which will make it look blurry and generally all wrong. But the CRT looks healthy (though I don't see much green), as is the flyback, yoke, and such hard to replace parts.

I have the hotel version of the that set in great condition, the picture is pleasing to the eye but not as good as a Zenith or RCA. They seem pretty well built but I've heard they like to eat flybacks. Luckily, I have a parts one that looks like crap but has a new fly in it and a good CRT. I also agree that this is a vertical problem, I had to change a few caps in mine because of the same issue.

I see two immediate problems; vertical shrink and has no video (chroma only). Needs a general troubleshooting, a few caps, and probably 852,720 solder connections reheated.

It is usually bad controls; contrast, vert size, etc. Could also be dirty service switch, bad bypass electrolytic and/or output tube in vertical circuit. Does not look serious.

I think Ford bought Philco somewhere around '61; but, Philco products didn't carry the "Ford" badge until the late '60's.

IIRC, in '74, Ford sold Philco to GTE-Sylvania. There could have been a tube type Philco TV after the GTE buyout; but, I doubt it. Every Philco branded TV that I've seen from the GTE era used the same chassis as a Sylvania. The only difference was the badge on the front of the set. And, I think GTE-Sylvania washed their hands of tubes by the very early '70's. I'm sure Sampson can tell us more about when the last GTE tube chassis was made, as he knows a lot about those older GTE sets.

In '81, GTE sold it's Sylvania and Philco consumer products line to NAP, who had already acquired Magnavox a few years before. From '81 until the 1990's, Magnavox/Sylvania/Philco sets were mostly NAP designed. The only possible exceptions may have been the E3x and E5x series chassis; which, I think were carry-overs from GTE.

I don't think any of this has anything to do with the value of this set. Even though it's a clean set and Philco-Ford color TV's seem to be harder to find, I still don't think this set would be worth what this guy wants for it, especially since it has circuit problems. In the past 20 years, I think I've only seen 3 solid state Philco-Ford color sets. One was a 19" motel set with an HV problem and a dead CRT, the other was a 19" set that I gave away, and the third was an early '70's TV/Stereo combo that someone smashed the neck off while they were unloading it for me to fix it. Needless to say, it didn't get fixed after they broke the CRT neck.

I know GTE continued to import sets from the Philco Taiwan factory long after '74. There might have been some 9" B&W sets with the one hardwired rectifier tube sold under the Philco name after the sale. I know I've seen some NAP era Philco B&W sets built at Philco Taiwan.

That reminds me of something. I have a '76 9" Sylvania GTE B&W portable. I've seen similar sets under the Philco-Ford, Philco-GTE, and Philco-NAP brands. All of these were made in Taiwan and used a solid state stick HV rectifier; but, I know there were versions from the early '70's that used a tube HV rectifier. I also have a 12" Philco B&W from '84 that was made in Taiwan.

There may not be a thing wrong with that set. It may just be showing a 16:9 HD picture, which of course will not fill the screen of any 4:3 NTSC TV.
