This TV is presently in Youngstown, Ohio which has only UHF stations, so the UHF adaptor would have to have been in place if the owner were to get the local channels at all; otherwise, no TV (just snow) unless the owner wanted to go to the trouble of putting up a deep-fringe antenna to get Pittsburgh stations.

In Milwaukee, they went to UHF, way early. You can imagine how many UHF converters were sold. They were pretty pricey back then.
It seemed the UHF stations were extremly weak. Our set had a Standard Coil cascode tuner, that had UHF strips. The UHF reception wasn't that great.
We had two VHF channels before that.

I looked at TV Guide's website under "TV Listings" this afternoon after reading your post, input the zip code for the Milwaukee area, and found all three of the city's network TV stations are on VHF channels, channels four, six and twelve. When were these stations ever on numbers higher than 13?

I'm refering to way back, early to mid 50's. It's all different now.
In the 50's, CBS was on channel 25, ABC was 12 and NBC was channel 4.
Channel 6 came later and was an independent channel. There was all kinds of strange events, regarding affiliations with the major networks. Still going on today. Nothing but politics.

I actually thought that "use it for an aquarium" was a joke. Do people really do this? When I acquired my first set, our family's 1950 Motorola, I only intended to use it as a piece of nostalgia.

Unfortunately, yes, people who are not into antique/vintage TV like we are will do this if they have no use for the TV (or if it doesn't work anymore), and if the cabinet was made of real wood and is in decent shape. I once saw a TV that had been modified this way, the chassis having been put out with the trash and the aquarium being mounted behind the CRT safety glass. Anyone who would do this to a good old TV that could be restored obviously does not care about the vintage or antique value of the television.

I just sent a personsl message to this guy.. Telling him that anyone who did this should be boiled in oil or tarred and feathered.. and that he should be ashamed for listing it as such.. It most likely will go on deaf ears, as he just wants the big bucks and doesn't what happens to the set..

I saw a empty 16" blond GE console cabinet at the G/W yesterday. They had it marked $49.99. There was a note attached saying, it could be used as a fish tank, etc. The cabinet was a little beat.

The part that kills me the most about fishtanking is that , besides destroying a vintage TV , they would almost HAVE to make a lousy fishtank ! I have had several aquariums over the years (I'm too old now for all of the upkeep required) and I would never put an aquarium in a box where ya loose visibility of all but the forward facing side . Beyond that , I know how fish tanks can get a bit stinky if your not 100% on the upkeep , and the thought of a box of moldy wood in the living room would be enough for me to nix the idea right from the start . I had a 150 gallon salt water setup , and there aren't many TVs that would have fit inside , except maybe one of the "aircraft carrier" sets from the 60s .

There is a reason why fish tank supply stores sell nice stands for the tanks to sit on . This reason becomes crystal clear once ya see a couple of these hacked "custom enclosures" . So there ya have it , from a former aquarium owner and present day tube radio collector , a fishtanked TV would be my last , Last , LAST choice , in fact , I wouldn't have a tank at all if the only one available was a hacked antique TV ....

The chassis was missing already. Looks like it was for ages.
It was of no consequence forty years ago, as there was so many of them around.
The next two generations are going to ask what happened to the CRT TV's that are common today.
