Scored an 8" Motorola from C/L
Saw this this afternoon on Craigslist for $50, about 45-50 miles away from me and the seller said it was working so I sent him a Text message.
He replied about 15 minutes later and we set up a time to meet. I took my working VT-71 along to check the CRT just in case but as it turned out the set really did work, or at least it produced a full raster, it was still impossible to determine how good the CRT was without a signal but it at least came on reasonable quickly and I figured for $50 I could always part it out and get that back, anyway after driving for nearly an hour I wasn't going home empty handed. ![]() Got it home and hooked it back to back with a working chassis and it looks like the CRT is in pretty decent shape! ![]() The picture showing the movie Car Wash is with the CRT hooked to my working set, the blank raster is the set running on it's original chassis and parts, pretty amazing considering it's 60+ years old. I think it would actually tune a picture if I cleaned the tuner and controls. |

Great score. I know from experience with mine that once refinished and restored you will have a great daily watcher. These sets are nice also because they take up very little room and are not that hard to work on.

I'm surprised the 8BP4 is still that bright!
Why is it so blue? I had an eight inch Bakelite Motorola 9T8 that I bought for $15 in 1957. I used it for two years whenever I wanted to watch a program if my parents were watching something else. It started to dim and bloom and I had to replace the HV caps due to leakage within a year. When I moved out in 1959, I took it with me and used it as my daily driver until 1963 when I was drafted. Two years later I pulled it from storage and used it until I bought a Sears/Toshiba color TV in 1966. The only other problems I ever had were a couple of small tubes. I kept it on top of the color set and watched the space shots on two networks at the same time. The CRT became very gassy and dim, and the CRT was no longer carried by any of the distributors, so I tossed the set in the trash just before I moved back to Tennessee in 1971. I used the already 8 year old set for 14 years, although it was in storage for two of those. I'd say I got my money's worth out of it. James |

Camera artifact most likely, it was a normal B&W in person.

Hard to find 8BP4s that work at all! Nice find, and you got a deal on it, IMHO.

A great deal for sure and if you prefer the bakelite cabinet, there's an empty one on ebay right now: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-MOTOROLA-V...-/310683102665
