Bob, That was a great video. I have "endured" many a training video during my 20 years with BellSouth/Cingular/AT&T and yours is among the best.
Thanks to you for your efforts and to Scotty for allowing us a brief insight into the world of CRT re-building. I loved the radio going in the background. Living in the sometimes sunny Southeast, I cringed at the weather report on the radio saying that the high was going to be only +1 deg F! I also got a chuckle with the 7 digit telephone numbers - we haven't had 7 digit dialing since 1996! I have two questions: 1. Where did Scotty get the replacement gun for the 19VP22? 2. How well did the 19VP22 perform after the rebuild? Update: Is the gun the same as a 21" roundie, like a 21AXP22? Last edited by Tom9589; 11-24-2014 at 10:57 AM. Reason: additional information |

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the kind comments on the "The Craft of Picture Tube Rebuilding" documentary movie currently being shown on my web site. (link to my site below in the signature block) The gun in the 19V can be replaced with a standard 21" roundie Delta gun. The gun was purchased from Southwest Vacuum Products (the company has ceased operations) The tube appeared to be a successful rebuild (at first) but it is now arcing in the gun area. It is possible that it has taken on some air, or that the gun was not sufficiently Knocked. The vast majority of these tubes which have an ultor ring similar to the 15GP22, are prone to having vacuum leaks. Some leaks are small enough that it takes about 30 days to damage the vacuum, others take longer and some still will loose vacuum within hours of rebuilding. If a tube of this type is holding vacuum prior to rebuilding, there is no guarantee that it will still hold vacuum after it goes through the rebuilding process. I have a suspicion that the act of relieving the vacuum on a non-leaker and then putting it in the oven and re-evacuating the tube, places such tremendous physical stresses on the tube's envelope, that even if it was holding a vacuum prior to rebuilding, it could develop a vacuum leak after rebuilding due to the physical stresses the rebuilding process places on the tube. I have an agreement with the present owner to buy the tube you saw in the video, in it's present condition to use in the 19" Motorola set that I got at the estate sale this fall. Even if the tube doesn't work, at least I will have the correct tube installed in the set for display purposes.

Bob,
I'm quite familiar with Southwestern Vacuum Products. I talked to its CEO, Ron Ordway, about donating the equipment to ETF when they closed SWVP, but I think Ron found another one of his subsidiaries which could use the equipment. I live about 2 miles from SWVP's last location. Too bad for ETF and the sake of rebuilding CRTs. |

It sure would be helpful to know if the division that got the equipment would still be willing to rebuild electron guns the way SWVP was doing for John Folsom and myself before SWVP closed it's doors. It appears that you possibly have some ability to communicate with Mr. Ordway. Do you think you might be able to speak to him to find out what division got the equipment and if they are building electron guns, or possibly taking in outside work for gun rebuilding? Electron guns are going to be the single biggest obstacle in our way to being able to rebuild crt's at the ETF Museum.
