Crosley bakelite TV

I just bought a Crosley bakelite TV, model 10-401! It's missing the continuous tuning plastic dial on the right side, but otherwise looks great! I've been wanting this and the ge locomotive set for a long time! Next find will be the GE set.

Nice find! I remember Harry Poster calling this model "unpopular with collectors" years ago, but it actually proved to be fairly rare. In all my years focused on vintage TV's, I've can't recall seeing one for sale. The control knob will be a difficult find, but good luck!

Yeah, I've been collecting around 20 years and this is the first one I've found. It's got the tuning knob, but missing the escutcheon behind it. A quarter inch thick, reverse painted dial.

It's a very cool set for sure. I think these days even Harry would agree!
Great you have the tuning knob. It may be possible to repro the other part.

Congratulations! I too really like this model and was lucky enough to win one at the Eli Buk action a few years ago.

Thanks. I actually have a couple of the red knobs in my stash, but no escutcheons. I powered it up slowly on a variac and we have life! A simple recap should be all it needs...fingers crossed. I'm suprised at how bright and clear this set is.

I think I may have the channel escutcheon (which I believe is a sort of knob it's self).

I'll check my stash later and report back.

I believe it's a continuous tuner and that rotates around to the indicate the channel selected

That mask is huge, did they also make a 12" version in the same cabinet?

There's only one other model I koiw of, 10-428, but I've never actually seen one.

While cleaning the inside of the set, I happened to notice a raised GE logo on the inside of the front frame. I guess GE made this case and maybe the set for them. It looks close to the GE locomotive set, I wonder how similar?

I've only seen pictures of the chassis, genuine Crosley.
GE was in just about every line of business. Plastics, electrical insulation and varnishes. They must've had a bakelite molding plant, where they made that cabinet, as well as their own.

Good observation and a very interesting find. Obviously GE supplied Crosley with the cabinets in an attempt to cash in on the popularity of the GE "locomotive".
