admiral 22x12 and 12lp4

hey guys and gals(ya never know),i recently picked up a admiral
22x12,and found the crt is a RCA type replacement or rebuild,it has tags all over it and with a date of manuf of 1958,but this tube looks aluminized..??were these tube rebuilt this way?
i was not sure to restore or trash, the bakelite cabinet is great, chassis is dirty, full of yellow stuff, but comes off,i got half a raster but is too bright and well focused for a 12lp4,then i noticed the aluminum coating around the tube inside,it has an ion trap but i didnt try it yet with it off...i don't know the year of this set,but the I.F section is shielded pretty well, and has the correct tuner..(sigh)
if you look closely at the pic below it shows the crt not fitting the masking correctly,am i missing a gasket..?
thanks
terry

Grade A

Terry, if it was a "Grade A" rebuild, meaning the only thing they reused was the glass then yes, it might have been aluminized at that time.

A lot of advertisments from that time were touting the benefits of replacing your old CRT with a new Aluminized type.

Be glad, they look a lot better!

P.S. I wouldn't trash it!
I've heard the yellow stuff is cadmium oxide and is toxic to breath so don't disturb it.

Terry,

Most tubes went to a straight-gun design when the aluminized versions were produced. An ion trap should not be used with these, but there could be an exception. Examine the rear of the gun assembly to see if part of it is bent. If it is, it requires an ion trap magnet. Compare the gun with one not using a magnet, and you should be able to see if they are the same.

In the 60's, I discarded many ion trap magnets after replacing CRTs with aluminized versions. If the tube requires an ion trap magnet, you will not get a raster if it is removed.

I also have picked up the 22x12 but I am in need of a back cover and the front door cover to cover the controls here is my pic. the chassis seems to be real clean except years of dust needs to be cleaned off it
