The Ctc-11 Has Finally Come!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok Guys, Here it is, the moment I've been waiting for.........The ctc11 finally came through the fright company just yesterday. It was sitting in the garage when i came home in great undisturbed shape. First things first, plug it in. And yes, no picture as advartised but the sound was beautiful. The tuner was stuck, so the chassis is comming out no matter what.
To my amazement, the loss of picture was because the HV rectifier went to air!!!!!!!!!! Popped in a 3a3 and on comes the picture, but badly out of sync. This called for a new horizontal phase detector diode, thats fixed, good sync. Color even worked now! The tint balanced nicely. Felt the flyback, a bit too warm, pulled the chassis again. A bad .12uf cap off the efficiancy coil, way too much leakage. The cathode current falls down to 200ma, exactly what is to be running at! Good thing, the slug in the coil was siezed as usual. Changed 2 black beauty caps, luckily only 2 were used in this set. A bad 2.2 meg resistor from line to chassis ground was bad. And last but not least, a dissasembly of the tuner to cure it from being seized. All gears for the drive were like new, everything got lubbed with penetro90 (by far the best lubricant, it doesnt evaporate like wd-40) Put the chassis back in and WOW!!! The picture is razor sharp! The focus control balances beautifly and the 21FJP22 tests as strong as new. By the way, all original tubes still in this set. Looks like nobody ever took the back off, an undisturbed chassis. I must say, this set was a pleasure to work on, the vertical chassis is an excellent design, everything comes out attached in one peice, and serviceing can be done in a vertical posistion. RCA did a nice job designing that, they should have stuck with this concept. On to the remote control, the chassis had only 2 bad tubes. The original remote didnt work, I didnt attempt to fix it yet. However, it did work with my newer generation RCA VICTOR remote for my ctc-31. So the tv set is perfect. The remote control is badly corroded, basically eaten up the insides from acid. I dont think its even worth fixing if I can find another remote. But anyway, the worst did not happen, the fly is good and the tv is by far one of the most favorite in the collection. |

Heres a picture of the cubs at wrigley
The picture quality blows me away. Could be the finest in detail of all my other roundies

inside the cabinet
Heres what the inside looks like in a CTC-11E, by the way, the CRT is dated 4-61, which is the lastest of all dates on the tubes. Most tubes where dated either 48-60, or 52-60.

the chassis
I loved working on this set. It was so easy. Half the battle in servicing these sets is having easy access to the components and removing them! Somehow, the 6GH8's were good! Luckily there is only 2 in the entire set, and the set still gets to keep almost all of its original tubes. Just by looking at the pcb and sockets, its definitly a low milage set

GREAT SET!
Doug, Great set!! I was keeping my fingers crossed for you, and am happy you got it going with little trouble! Damn that set looks clean. It really must have not seen much use! Now that you have this one you'll probably need more room, so I could take a Zenith roundie off your hands....... (hint hint)! HA

Doug,
That is a great set! That chassis looks like new. Good score. The remote chassis looks slightly different than mine. I'll have to go look. I seem to remember mine had a lot more tubes on it. You sure are getting experienced fixing these up! Good for you!

your set is as clean as my ct10. it only had a bad horizontal output tube in it. it has ultra low hours on it. it has the 21cyp22 in it and produces an excellent picture. the printed circuits show hardley any use.

remote
Ok, currently Ive been using a variable DC power supply for testing this remote. Anyone know what type of battery this thing uses? Looks like a battery that is slightly larger in diameter than a AA and higher voltage. Ive been putting 4.5 volts to it as the next generation remotes used a 4.5v VS133 ( I think) Anyone know for sure.
By the way, anyone got one of these early 7 button rca remotes they'd like to sell? Doug |

Doug, Doesn't it use one of those round 9 volt batteries? That's the only type I've run into on earlier remotes.

mercury battery
Doug,
I believe the cell you have is the same as this one in this Maggie remote. It is a mercury battery, and if I remember correctly, it is 4.7 volts. My neighbor had one of those in her 1958 Hoffman Solar AM radio. Since they won't sell those anymore, I came up with a working solution. I went to the camera department at WalMart and found an older style flash battery that was 4.5 volts. I was able to solder a little piece of metal onto one of the contacts in the radio so the battery would make contact on each side. The diameter of the flash battery was smaller than the mercury cell, so I wrapped some electric tape several times around it to fatten it up some. Without the tape, the battery would move around to much in the radio. After all was said and done, the radio played fine.

since this set is a ctc11, it uses a 21FBP22. I believe the ctc10 used the 21CYP.
Thanks for the battery info. Im still troubleshooting it with 4.5 volt powersupply. Doug |
