Where are all of the 13 inch chromacolor sets?
It seems that the little 13 inch CCII sets are VERY rare anymore. IN the 80's, I found and fixed a few of therm. All were pretty simple to fix, one had some sort of arc-over on a terminal strip near the fly, another had a bad horiz. B+ resistor, IIRC. The tubes in both were fine. i have long liked these sets--built like a much larger set, but small and portable.
Today..I have 2 of these sets, a 13GC10 and a 13HC10. The tubes seem good in both of these too. One has some short in the vertical blowing the B+ diodes in that ckt, the other has a focus problem. But, where have they all gone? I acquired both of these years ago, from thrift stores. NONE have surfaced since. Being a small (but heavy) set--did they all end up in the packer trucks? I sure hope not. But it seems to be the case. |

Portables and table models have the disadvantage of being easy to throw out as soon as they die. Consoles tend to linger due to lazyness/owners being out of shape, but only can stay so long before someone raises a stink. Though portables if stored working or dead can stay buried until they become antiques if luck is with them.
I own a 19" CCII, a 13" CCII or early systemIII, and passed on a 13" CCII in Alabama about 4 years ago. They are out there just not as common as before. Also with the DTV transition perfectly good sets are hitting the curb daily from either ignorance, the desire not to spend money on something old, or the vain snobbery of refusing to have anything electronic over 5 years old.

I feel the issue of the smaller screen, transformer chassis Chroma-colors is that they were too heavy and too expensive. At that time-frame, the imports were getting a lot better, performance and reputation-wise. They were easier to handle and of course, less expensive. |

In 25+ years, I've seen a lot of 13" color TV's; but, the CCII 13" sets seem to be very rare in my area. In all this time, I've only seen 2 or 3 and I currently own 1, a space command set from '76.
The majority of what I see around here is not over 15 years old. Sometimes, I'll see an '80's TV (usually a console); but, rarely ever see anything older. With consoles, it's usually older people who own them and when they die, either a portable TV ends up on top of it or the console gets rolled into the spare junkroom until the people either pass away or move to a nursing home. Then, the old console either gets put out to the street or donated to the SA by whoever is cleaning out the house. With portables, there is generally nothing attractive about the cabinet and they are usually easy to throw away; so, people toss them when they break.

Chicago most likely. One guy there has what's probably the world's biggest collection of Zenith sets.

I've bought a lot of crap.......scratch that....."stuff" off of ebay over the years, and I have noticed a lot of Zenith product coming from the Chicago area. I've also bought several Magnavox items from sellers located in Ft. Wayne, IN. It makes sense the home-town manufacturer had a built-in sales advantage.

Those have always been the more rare of the Zeniths. I've never actually had one myself, but I do have a 13" early version Sys III. The one I'd REALLY like to find one of again, is the all-tube 13 or 14" Zenith with the metal case & metal back, and the long metal aux door along the bottom front. (weighs a ton, but has a handle).

I think you mean a 15YC615 or so 1968 set. It IS a nice set---with a "console style" hybrid chassis , TOTALLY cold (NOT just a "filamant transformer--but a full power tranny), and such. THey are nice, but MUCH heavier than a 13GC10 style set. I have ONE. It is in the shed behind my house. The tube IS good, at least it was when I got in back in 1997, it DID have somewhat of a picture then. Can't remember if it had a cataract or not---and even if it did not, it may now all this time later.
Too bad you are so far away---or we could maybe work something out... |

Hi there, I never had a 13" chromacolor or tube 13" Zenith, but I have two system IIIs, from 1978 and 1979. The one I like best has been heavily used, and the CRT displays bleeding on text at high contrast levels. The grayscale balance has not shifted however.
It is the model with the channel 2 through 13 slide-out plastic numbers arranged vertically, and two slots for UHF. I actually trashed a 19" set from '80 that had the chassis after this one, with the tri-focus tube. At one time, not that long ago, I was buried in this type of TV (all found on the curbs). Today, not even a 2000s-era computer monitor will survive on the curb around here for more than a few hours. Scrappers. I've talked to a few, and they take anything with a cord. |

That is a lot like the way large appliances go in this area. Almost NONE of them make it to the packer truck !! Scrappers of ALL sorts grab them-sometimes in LESS than an hour after they go out !! I remember my neighbor put out an electric stove, ceramic top type, a few years ago,. I was out for LESS than an hour---before someone had grabbed it !!
