Stromberg-Carlson 350R
I have the opportunity to acquire this console. I don't have pictures, but it is a big, beautiful, stained wood cabinet, probably from the late 1930s. The radio isn't working, but I imagine I am handy enough to fix it if I can find schematics and tubes (if necessary). Are these things reasonably accessible? Are there any other components that might be tricky or even impossible to find? Also, how does this unit rank in the realm of big, old console ("furniture") radios? I know Stromberg-Carlson gear was well made and well regarded, but is a unit like this worth a huge investment if necessary to keep "original"?

We have a very similar Stromberg-Carlson chassis only (don't have the cabinet) which we have repaired and it works very well...replacing all capacitors and any bad wiring and maybe some bad resistors should get it working. Tubes do not decay over time, just with use so they should be OK...all of the components you need can be easily obtained today....just make sure you familiarize yourself with the safety precautions for tube equipment as high voltages are used. The Stromberg-Carlsons tend to be somewhat more complex (and have better performance) than the cheaper radios but the one we did wasn't too difficult.

Strombergs are pretty easy to work on - some even have an upper frame to hold up the chassis when flipped over. The 350 was mid-line, 10 tubes plus tuning eye, should pull in stations as well as the best consumer receivers.
The Stromberg 350 service folder is on my webpage: http://www.audiophool.cjb.net/MadeInRoch.html (edit) Just noticed it was the 'R' model... the half-round cabinets are VERY collectible (at least _I_ want one!) |

Funny, I just bought a fixer-upper one of these in New Jersey (I'm in VT), Strombergs rock. Anybody got a P27504 speaker?
