Dig the crazy modification

Look closely at the added control on the side of this VT-71

There is a cable from the shaft to the Horizontal hold so you don't have to reach around behind the set to adjust it

It must have had a horiz hold problem at some time and rather than have it fixed they just made it easier to adjust.

As the owner of a VT-71, I don't know why they just didn't put those damn controls on the front

"Remote control" on VT-71

At 18 minutes and 46 seconds into the New Jersey Antique Radio Club's 10th Anniversary video .www.njarc.org/njarc10th.ram you can hear John Dilks tell a very funny personal story about this.

I used to find this frustrating too. I was always paranoid that when reaching around to adjust the hor hold I'd zap myself on one of those flimsy wires going to the CRT.

Note I said "used to". After undoing the AFC circuit in my VT-71's the hor hold became rock solid and turned into a set it and forget it kind of thing.

Come to think of it, AFC was a circuit addition on the later sets; maybe those controls are in back because access wasn't needed that often with the original design.
