Wards Airline Sets
A few post down, I mentioned seeing a Roundie in a 1969 Montgomery Ward Catalog. I'm a little curious about those sets.
Who made those sets for MW and are they a rare set out there in the TV field ? Are they of pretty good quality or are they crappy ? I remember seeing a 1966 model on Doug's web site. The legs on the models I have seen are a little space age looking. Did they screw off and the TV could be set on a table etc..?

Those were probably made by Warwick Electronics or Wells-Gardner. I also saw an Admiral built Airline solid state set from the '70's. Many of the tube type color chassis were RCA clones.

If the chassis were used in many different sets, the legs likely were removable in order to accommodate the many different models. Maybe Wells-Gardner kept the same chassis in a 21" tabletop as in a console set...different cabinets

Lots of times you can decipher the maker of a Wards set from the model number, WGC1234 would be Wells-Gardner, ADM1234 is Admiral, etc. Some are trickier. Here I would guess WG.
I think what they often would do is list a table model and then for maybe $10 extra they would sell you the "kit" to make it into a console, the kit consisting of the 4 legs. I would expect such a set to be a middling performer, with a picture that might compare with a CTC-12 through 16. Audio would be a weakness.

Doug has a 1966 Airline listed on his site. He mentioned that the speaker was located on the side of the unit instead of the front.
The photo I have in the MW catalog is a 1969 model. I don't know if they had moved the speaker to the front by then or not. I didn't even realize that roundies were available that late untill I came here. One of my favorite roundie designs I have seen is of a 1965 Admiral in a French Provincial Console with remote......doubt i'll ever find that. I also like the French Provincial Zenith roundie that Doug has on his site. I like the traditional styled consoles. I'll be lucky to even find or get a color roundie that isn't beat all to crap.
