I've been working on finally getting my 1949 Hallicrafters 601 TV back to life. I've actually had the TV for over a year, but it is in bad shape, the chassis being home to a family of rodents at one time.
Well, I got the chassis as clean as it is going to get, and am starting to probe into the electronics. The scarriest part is that the flyback looks pertty bad. As you can see in the photo a lot of the insulation has flaked off, and there are many exposed windings. Is this OK, or something that's going to blow up in my face when I power the set up (with a variac of course) Thanks for any help... |

I've actually seen worse that worked
![]() If you've got a roll of HV wire, I'd replace those leads to the tubes, if at all possible - they look shot. I once resurrected a flyback where the HV lead had broken off - I peeled back the wax coating, found the *tiny* HV wire, soldered a new wire on, and melted new beeswax around to seal it up, and it worked great. It's very tricky to do this, though. I don't get why they coated these things with beeswax for so long, I've got a Setchell Carlson that's got an epoxy coating around the flyback's HV winding, and it's stayed in good shape. Beeswax, no matter what, melts and looks bad after a while. ![]() That tranny looks a bit beat, but it might still work. It's not going to explode on you, but it might spark a bit if it dies... |

Max,
You should see the flyback in my Predicta! The insulation is all cracked and falling off with the windings exposed, but it still works and to my surprise doesn't have bolts of lightning jumping out to the cage! I rarely ever turn it on, but when i do fire it up, that nasty looking flyback performs like new!

OK, I guess I will power up the set sometime soon.
As to the wire to the tubes, I have some test probe wire thats rated up to 1000V, is this good enough? it seems better than the "nothing" there now, but seems low for the wire going to the HV rectifier, but is probably for the 6BQ6s top cap right? I might just leave that one, since ti is better than the lead going to the HOT, which is just a bunch of little pieces of bare wire stuck together. Thanks for the help... |

I was able to find some 40 kv rated wire at an old electronics shop in town...also you can salvage HV lead from computer monitors or junked modern TV's.

Max,
I agree with the others about the flyback. I've seen alot worse and they worked ok. I would focus on replacing the two wires and then slow start it after you check the rest of the set. If everything seems ok then coat the flyback with some sensor safe silicone after you have played it for a bit and all the moisture has evaporated from it. It will be a nice set when your done and as always we like to see pic's -Tony |

You can use the wire from modern flybacks that are removed from junked tv's.

Well, I finally got a chance to test out the set.
I brought it up on the varaic last night, with the 6BQ6 removed. Today I put it back together and turned it on. I got great sound, but that was it. I think it is a problem with the flyback, since there was no noise from the cage. ![]() On the good side, there were no bad smells, no magic smoke released, and nothing blew up in my face. I'll look more into it tonight, any ideas? I was going to put the set on eBay anyway, since Hallicrafters sets seems kind of desirable, I wanted to test it before I let it go, and if it was promising, I might keep it and restore it. Before condeming the flyback, check that the various windings are really ok or not. You'll probbably need a schematic for this.
Just look for continuity now. Make sure the deflection yoke's good too - or you won't get anything. Carefully check your voltages around the horz section. I'm betting you have a problem somewhere in there - of all the sets I've bumped into, only one had a bad flyback. There's lots else that'll keep the horz section from 'booting' besides a bad flyback. |

A bad filter capacitor or bad paper capacitor can cause the HV not to fire up.Also check the horiz. output or osc tube.
