Victor RE-45

Working on a buddys victor RE-45.

I cant find the electrolytics anywhere. unless their hidden somewhere. same thing with wax caps. Also the schematic floating about the net is totally unreadable at least by me. hehe.

Also, i have a bad 45 tube and i need to get one somewhere.

Any ideas? Thanks.

If i'm not mistaken, these had their caps potted in tar in square boxes on the chassis. Sort of like an Atwater Kent.

All components are sealed in tar on these. This was called a "catacomb" chassis, and they are a royal pain in the rear end to work on.

These sets were made before electrolytics were used. They had large paper capacitors in one of the tar-filled cans. Unlike electrolytics which dry out, these caps have often been found to be OK even after all this time, and many just leave them connected. If after you have everything else fixed, and bring the set up easy on a variac, and you have no hum, you should be OK. Often the large wirewound resistor in these sets may have open sections. They can be replaced with individual wire wounds.

I brought up the schematic on Nostalgia Air (link attached), rotated it clockwise, and used the + button to increase the size, and find it is quite readable.

BTW here's a thread over on A. R. F. that addresses the capacitor issue:

Hi guys!

I usually hang out in the B/W TV forums but I saw this posting and had to post! The RE-45 I had had shorted paper caps in the power supply. It was very confusing mapping out the schematic for the capacitors. I didn't do a pretty job at replacing the caps. It was too difficult to pull the can that held the capacitors, so I added them under the chassis. Its not pretty, but it worked. Great radio.

MAKE SURE TO FUSE THE SET!!

Best regards,
