?? 1959 Zenith TV ( To help kids)
Another scammer perhaps
A picture of the actual set would be nice. I can't think of any 'veritical' tubes that would run $65 and of course the asking price is crazy."I am selling a 1959 Zenith Tv. It needs a veritical tube other than that no of no other problem. Tube can be bought for 65.00. It has a mohogany cabnet and does have a few scratches. This can be restored very easily or kept as a antique. Its been in my family since 1959 and its being sold to help homeless children. Its a rare find so I have placed a reserve on it." http://cgi.ebay.com/1959-Zenith-TV-h...-/150453376714 I hope we get a new forum as pugs5061 suggested for bitching about stuff like this

I'm kinda thinking this is at least partially a gold digging scam. What kids is she helping? How much percentage wise goes to the kids? She obviously did NO research. Not even bringing up the sets value, how can she ship it for $100 to anywhere in the lower 48? It can be done but it takes research or a trucking company in your back pocket or back yard. Just seems like she pulled all the prices out of her
. I wouldn't mind spending a few $ more to help a charity but 10 times what something is worth? Keep in mind she has a reserve on top of that bargain of a starting price! It may be against ebay rules to not show a charities name if you claim an auction is to help out a charity. Anybody know? One thing is for certain. The general public really has no idea what old TV's are worth. If we can somehow educate people into thinking, like they are starting to with radios that unrestored old TV's are worth very little and recapped working restored sets are priceless this hobby will go places. Even if its not reality now a push from all of us who care(want prices to go up) and it may become a reality. But then again if it hasn't happened yet? Its the Antique philosophy in people. When looking up TV's on ebay I see Antique Armoires, Consoles and TV stands for sale for hundreds and even thousands of dollars. Why shouldn't the TV's of the same vintage that were housed in such furniture go for the same $$. JMHO Yes this set is overpriced.

Well said. Don't forget the best part though - no pictures. They just lifted one from tvhistory.tv
We have no idea what set they really have - if any!

I've asked the seller a few questions so we'll see how it goes. I'll tell you what I'd do though. Nothing against the seller but I'd work hard to make this a darn pretty auction with lots of pics and information just to make sure the kids get their money. Kids are absolutely the best thing going. Even if your heart is in the right place this is minimal effort.

"I can try to jeff, I can try to use my daughters phone and take one. It is the only one that can load up to the computer"
This is one of two things. I love film photography so I root around for old cameras to try out. I landed three Brownie Hawkeye cameras on eBay for $15. A buddy I work with said his mom has one in the attic she thinks ought to be worth "a lot of money". They're actually worth $5. Every attic in America has had a Brownie Hawkeye camera in it at one time. But I think when some people see old stuff they just think valuable. Valuable equates to lots of dollars. The seller may just not be from the computer generation and the answer I got lends to that theory. My Dad doesn't know how to get a picture on a computer much less find a forum to post that picture to. He is very good at other things, however. There is a technology gap I tend to forget about. So it's either these things combined or the seller is just out to make some dirty money. |

This seems to be a seller with an honest heart but I always love seeing the words "this can be easily restored". I suck at restoring stuff ever since I lost my easy restore wand.

I'm glad to here there probably isn't foul play or scamming going on. If it were easy to restore, 1) It probably wouldn't need restoring and 2) You would do it yourself right?.
Easy is a relative word. Restoring something is only easy when it is a passion. Some of my best accomplishments were easy because I enjoyed some of the hardest and downright almost impossible tasks that were involved in completion of a goal. A sane person would ask why I went through such misery for such a small reward. The answer is love or passion.

Wow - look at the mold on those walls! I hope the winner isn't too disappointed when they see this old girl in the light of day.

Re: cameras, a thrift store near me has dozens of film cameras of all sorts piled on a shelf, most of them marked for a couple of bucks. They also have working (solid state, of course) TV's ranging from $15 to $75. Reality check.

If the pictures had better quality and I had the money and space for it, I'd do it. I've still got a '56 Hoffman Colorcastor waiting for restore. Full re-cap and new pic tube. No time, space, or money to do it. Mold walls dont affect me like it would most people. Just have to be careful.
