Please tell me why I should not recycle a Thomsen/Indianapolis GE i really need room for all the tube stuff I have been getting
While I can use it, nobody wants it.Its a 27" CTC149, made in October 1988 has its remote and manual, channel 91 switches it to the composite video input. It works OK, but shows its age. Yesterday I took it to SA and tried to donate it. There were sets 13" and smaller on shelves and all the larger sets were gone. They also placed an age limit on what they will take. ![]() I would keep it but its become a low set on the totem pole. I really hate to do it, there are many (post CTC203 RCA's) much more worthy of being recycled.

Don't worry about it. I'm currently junking an RCA-built Sears set with a CTC159 chassis. If a lover of early solid-state stuff has no interest in these, good luck getting rid of it. I used to go for the later 80s stuff, now it just isn't worth the room it takes up to me. I'm saving the chassis though.

I'd say nothing really lost there. Unfortunately, these sets are not old enough to interest most collectors of vintage electronics and much too old for the general buying public (heck, anything over a year old is generally too old for today's buying public). So, take any parts you may want out of it and recycle the rest. It's a shame that it's gotten to this point in society; but, that's the way it is. The CTC149 was a good chassis that was used in entry level and some mid-line consoles and portables; and, they used to be good moneymakers. However, if you're area is like mine, you'd have trouble giving it away.

If it really bugs you, then you could look for another thrift that would take it.
I rob SS sets of any caps over 50V rated, power resistors, the yoke, the fly/HV wires, and anything else I might find use for in other sets and projects when ever I can....On some free sets I scrap the money I save reusing caps alone make it worth my time. An SS set has to be pretty early or interesting for me loose sleep over parting it out.

It to bad but you got to do what you got to do. Its a
solid set & good runner but nothing special about it. IMHO the SS sets to be saved first are the milestone sets like CTC40 & the space age styled high end sets. There are also some rare chassii only used for a very short time in the early SS days. Some probably only a hand full exist now. Who has an Admiral SS console ? they had at least 3 major chassis in as many years & didnt sell many. We used to donate good working sets to a local charity. They used to take abt 4 per week. Then the poor folk wouldnt take them anymore, ran out & bought flat screens with there welfare money. I must be a sap for working all those years. 73 Zeno

The 1969 RCA Two Thousand console comes to mind. That's how many were made according to the ad.

There have been a number of 80s/early 90s sets that I gave away or parted out; many I feel I will live long enough to regret getting rid of. Both my father and grandfather bought new 19" sets in 1991 (a GE and a Sylvania), both USA made, both worked fine when I gave them away. I put my the Colortrak console my uncle bought new in about '84 out on the curb. Just can't save 'em all.

when it comes to the 90's sets and computer moniters i test them see how good they work and just strip all the compents off the board and restock them ,i even strip the compack flour. light bulbs they have usible caps and transisters ,when it comes to restoring a old tv i use new caps for them, but there is alot of good parts in some of the late model tv's and other things, better then letting them get scraped.

in a rich part of Ma. We would wood consoles all day but modern ones rarely. Always kept a few on the floor for the wow factor. Now you see Avantis & Panoramas but rarely others. 73 Zeno

True, the Harrisburg store will take it, for now. Maybe I should give them $5 for that Sony 27FS100 and trade up
. The Lancaster Habitat ReStore quit taking TVs, possibly after I dumped that working 1998 36" Panasonic.

I have been promoting my "free " sets as theft-proof. Id rather have something bulky that will be still there when I get home, after working like a prole .

Nobody is dumb enuf to steal a 35" console from your hunting camp or 27" from the dorm. In the end even that didnt work, the spoiled brats wouldnt take a CRT & the second homers wanted to show off......... In the end we all have limited space & have to choose kinda like a life boat. Even if you got a warehouse sooner or later we all suffer from vertical collapse, then its a pile of junk someone has to pay to clean up. 73 Zeno
