Got me a HOSS !

...A Newcomb model AFM-1500, that is. "Portable" (Ha-Ha...) AM-FM 8 tube radio, w/Magic Eye, & 6 X 9 speaker, made by the same people, likely, wh made yr Grade School record player. And this thing is built to the same standards, I looked it up on Google, & there was a catalog-No date- but likely mid-60s, this beast had a list price of $199.95.. Only one I've ever seen, could stand a de-oxing, & good cleaning. Gave $70 for it, prolly too much in a way, but something THIS odd doesn't pop up every day, & I believe in striking when the iron's hot... Besides, made friends w/the seller, he seemed like a good guy, told him about us, he said he'd check us out. This thing weighs a GOOD 20 LBS...Like I said, a HOSS...

This bad boi has a footprint a little bigger than a Pioneer RT-707 R2R. I know, 'cause that's what I perched it on, back in the "Ships' Radio Room"... Wife RARELY looks in there, except to snort derisively, & chide Yer Ol' Unca Sandy on how MESSY it is in there...

Aye-Yup. To the Navy, at least, anyway. I have a couple EH Scott radios that were made for the Navy, & let's just say they're built on the "Heavy" side of "Substantial".. This Newcomb outfit made a LOT of record players for schools, their stuff was pretty "Hell for Stout"..

Good RARE find Sandy.
I'd never seen one either. Ad says it has the Conelrad Marks, so its pre-1965.
That 9 inch oval speaker IS probably the same one as the record players used.
- 'S a Hawwsss fer sure

Talked w/Kent T., who apparently knows a little about these guys, he said it was a pretty RARE piece..In approx. 25 yrs of stumblin' in, over, around, thru Aunty-Kue emporiums, perusing Eprey, etc, I've NEVER seen another... It DOES need a little touch up on the alignment, & MAYBE another cap replaced, but the eye tube is maybe the BEST I've ever seen..

Nice and I've never seen this exact model. Look for date codes on the speaker and filter cap. Just because it has CD markings does not mean it's pre-'65. That late '72-early '73 tube Newcomb AM radio that I recently found has them.
