Telethons tv208
Does anyone know of the name of another set that Was made exactly the same as the picture of my set in early television under teletone tv208. There is another company that made the same only it had different covering and called it another name . I'm trying to find the right schematic for this 208 and mine don't have the ballast but the one in earlytelevision has the ballast and it's different. I have a resistor between the 25z6 and 6x5 tube, 5 and 6 and it got really hot and will need to be replaced and I'm sure whatever it measures it's going to be a lot higher. It measures 1200 ohms it could be right but not sure. It's one of those resistors that look like a mica it has 3 dots but the colors are gone from heat. If I could get a name maybe I'll find it and it may have the right schematic without the ballast which is what I need, don't want to guess this resistor because it's between the rectifiers so it will have to be right.

Yes looks like the same so I'll see if I could find that schematic and maybe it will be what I have here, no ballast. Thanks

Well no luck finding a schematic that matches what I have here. That silvertone is not listed by the model number in early television either.

timmy, Sears # 9116 is in Sams 97-16, chassis code 478.221. The Sears set doesn't have the 6X5 though. All the best, Tom

Timmy,
Is your set a Tele-tone Model TV-208 or Model TV-208 TR ? Is the connector between the upper and lower chassis round or rectangular? Does your set use a selenium rectifier connected to pins 8 & 4 of the 25Z6gt? Can you take a picture of the set ? It might be easier to identify then. The Sam's Set 90-11 has a teletone 208 but there is no 6X5, but it does have a ballast called M3 in the parts list. The ballast is not marked in the schematic, only the resistances are shown. If you do have TV-208 could it be some one may have substituted a 6x5 in error for the ballast ? The ballast is located on the sweep chassis between the 25Z6 and 6SL7. Ed |

Yes ed is correct there is the model 208 and 208tr the 208 uses a ballast tube and the tr does not it will the model will be stamped in ink on the cardboard or what ever that is on the lower chassis rear controlls it will be stamped tl tm or tr the tm and tr are very similar. Sears and firestone portables use the tr also. THE EASIEST WAY TO TELL IS THE 208 TL HAS RECTANGULAR CINCH TYPE CONECTION BETWEEN CHASSIS AND THE TM AND TR HAVE A ROUND PLUG TO CONNECT CHASSIS. REMEMBER ONLY THE TL USES A BALLAST TUBE. THE TUBE NUBER IS TBR- 103D I THINK THE 102D OR THE 104D WILL ALSO WORK. SEE PHOTOS OF PLUGS.

Ok there is nothing on the cardboard on either chassis halfs and the plug is round not square. The location of the 6x5 is where the ballast would be if it were the other chassis. It also has the selenium rectifier wired to the 25z6 pins 8-3 . There is no 6sl7 between the 25z6 , it's the round chassis plug then the 25z6 next to that is 2 12sn7 tubes. I only figured it was just a 208 not knowing there was another chassis but the sets both are identical .

Hi Timmy,
If you have a TR , then you should have looking from the rear inward, 2-12SN7's on the right and starting from back left , the connector, 25Z6,a hole in the chassis,6SL7, and 12SN7. The 208 and 208TR sets are not the same. The tube count and circuits are different. That 6X5 mentioned at the beginning of the thread, doesn't belong in either 208 or 208tr as far as I can tell. |

On the tube lineup paper shows TLL 115 D and this set has 2 power resistors an 18 and a 40 ohm and the other SAMs shows an 18 in the same place as mine only the other is in the ballast so I know my set don't take a ballast because these resistors are for sure original. There was a 6sl7 in the set but don't remember where it was and it was shorted and all the rest of the tubes were ok so I'm thinking someone put the wrong one in as the tube paper don't show a 6sl7. So on the crt chassis on the right looking in is 2 12sn7 and on the left is the round plug 25z6 6x5 then 2 12sn7 tubes. I counted including the crt 22 tubes in this set. Also there is a 6al5 in the middle of the 2 12sn7 tubes on the right looking in , I don't have that tube there and not having a ballast I have the other. The chassis that has the ballast also has 22 tubes not including the ballast. So the set you refer to is the one with the ballast and having the square plug. The other is mine , no 6sl7, no ballast, no 6al5 in that location. So if the 208 has the ballast then mine must be the 208tr chassis. The no ballast chassis has the 6x5 in the location of the ballast in the other chassis.

I would look at the TV149 power supply. Maybe your two piece chassis is an earlier production, derived from the original version, one piece chassis.
They really complicated it, when they built the two piece chassis. |

Could someone shed some light on the fact that this teletone 208 don't have a 1n34 diode, I can't find one anywhere. Is it true?

If it is like the motorola VT-71 and many zeniths I've seen they probably hid it in one of the IF cans above chassis. Unless you need to access it for a repair, don't go on a diode hunt.
