Symphonic TV combo: No power
I found a Symphonic TV/DVD/VCR combo on the sidewalk this past week but didn't get a chance to test it until today. For some reason it just will not power on at all, it does seem to receive power but hitting the power button does nothing. I tested the fuse with my multimeter and it tests good, so I have no idea why this set won't turn on?
I didn't see a chassis number anywhere but the model number is WF719. |

The button may be bad try using a funai remote or a universal or try putting a vhs tape into it the tv should power on if not try my next suggestion. try looking in standby power supply if the PSU is not working the set won't power up at all

Took a while to get back to it but it turns out the problem with this TV was as mundane as it gets: the little push-buttons for Power and the other controls were either dirty or oxidized and came back to life after two blasts of contact cleaner!
Next hurdle: Trying to figure out why it just shuts off when I put a VHS tape in, it's looking like I have to desolder wires(!!!) to remove the VCR mech and I don't think I care enough to do that. |

Leave well enuf alone. After the first ones that had an actual separate
VCR they were almost all junk & near impossable to fix for profit. Fix the TV then find out they didnt tell you the VCR is toast too. Anyhows when combos shuts down trying to use the VCR it means the mechanics are NOT reaching the right mode ( position ). Watch the loading & cassette basket & belt for problems. 73 Zeno ![]() LFOD ! |

It being a funai means the mode switch is probably dirty and you don't have to do any soldering work to get to it. You just need to unscrew the mechanism from the top and two screws from underneath the chassis. Then left up the chassis a little bit to get to the mode switch. Another thing that can cause trouble are the tape end sensors the can sometimes get cold solder joints. Funai VCRs from 1992 and newer are very poorly made in my opinion and when a VCR powers off it's normally do to with mechanism and on funai's always start with mode switch. There are YouTube videos on getting to the mode switch on funai VCRs from that time poried.

The shop I put in 25 years at was a Funai authorized service center. I fixed many of those. One very common problem was the LED under the mechanism and the optical prism that went up into the cassette when loaded and directed the light to the takeup and end sensors and also the reel sensors. There was a kit for that which included the sensor phototransistors but I never found one of those bad, just the LED. The prism would sometimes warp out of shape, or get broken off when someone would try to remove a tape that wouldn't eject

I did end up finding and cleaning the mode switch, seen here:
