Uh, by the green halo, you mean the safety glass that is in front of your CRT? We called them the Jolly Green Giant contact lens, however, if you really want to remove this, do at your own risk. I used to remove them when replacing a CRT in older sets when the tube went bad, used the same protective glass, because the new CRT was shipped without one. Now, how to remove this thing. Put a moving blanked on the floor, fold twice only. Hold the CRT by the neck. Lift the CRT off the blanket at least 2 1/2 to 3 inches. Drop the CRT squarely down on the blanket. Once, if you are good at it, two times if you are a novice. It will seperate quite nicely. The lens is tough. You could beat on it with a roller skate and not break it. I have seen this done! We had one in the shop and it took several good wacks from a sledge hammer before it broke, so thumping it down on the floor is not a big deal. This is the reccomended way to get it off the CRT. Just don't let anyone bang the front of the CRT with this protective cover removed, could be unpleasantly interesting if children are involved.....the glass was kinda thin before these were intergrated as one unit.

Is this some sort of sick joke? You lift a CRT by grabbing the neck? It almost sounds possible to bounce the safety glass off but if I find out you are trying to be funny I will be very angry that someone's safety is put at risk. Somebody who knows needs to comment on this immediately! |

For the hard to remove safety glass
I suspect the hot wire method is best.

What he said ^
I haven't done the hotwire thing, but the reason that it is used is due to problems with the glass breaking on 'green' tubes when using the heat gun method. Pilotprose- even if that works it would make me extremely nervous. John |

Uh, I think I would rather watch someone else try that "bounce" trick! What would concern me the most is that it would involve putting a lot of stress on that neck. But then, it could also be lifted by other means (along the sides, or maybe with suction cups, or?) I am eager to hear the response of the seasoned hands.
The other day I was visiting a man who has been in the TV repair business since the fifties. I watched him pick up a 10BP4 by the neck and carry it around like a jug of milk. Well, I sure wouldn't do it, but who am I to tell him how to?

It almost sounds possible to bounce the safety glass off but if I find out you are trying to be funny I will be very angry that someone's safety is put at risk. Somebody who knows needs to comment on this immediately![/QUOTE I apologize for my quick suspicion of Pilotprose's motives. Please keep in mind that I live right between Miami and Palm Beach and in this area it is hard not to expect one to have sinister motives. We have the best of people and things here but also more of the worst people and things than most of you could probably imagine. After a little more thought I believe he was not trying to be funny. I do think his method would only work on a safetyglass that would pull off with a little hot air applied to the face. I expect it would not work on one that has the green halo as that type has a stronger bonding material and would best be cut with a hot wire wich is easy to make with the correct piano/guitar wire and a variable power supply to get it hot but not red. I am certain that one should NEVER pick up a CRT by it's neck. It is a completely unecessary risk. The thought of someone doing that made me worry someone might get hurt on top of losing something valuable. Also, wouldn't bouncing a CRT on it's face risk disturbing the internal shadowmask and phosphers? |

Why do I get the creepy feeling
many of you here would love to hear that the poor fella tried the bounce method resulting in glass flying into his eyes?
Oh yea... because I am the one who is off his rocker! |
