Mick,
Have you verified that the aquadag (conductive coating) of the CRT is securely grounded? If ungrounded or poorly grounded, it can cause a whole plethora of wierd symptoms mimicking sync, AGC, phasing and width/linearity troubles. Worth bookmarking for future referance. Bill(oc)
