this is nutz..right?

if anyone read my other thread about picking up the nordmende...well ok yeah it was expensive, but ...i've had it about a week or so at this point...it arrived with a broken lead supplying juice to the electrostats..i was fairly dissapointed at first but that was easily fixed, which got the tweeters working and while that made for a large improvement...i was still a little underwhelmed...then i got tweaking...the external speaker jack on this rig is a strange three contact jack that accepts a two pin Din plug in two positions..one way cuts off the internal speakers, the other doesn't...fiddling with this "cutoff" switch indicated a need for some cleaning resulting in another increase in sound quality and clarity...now this is where it gets a little nutty...

see i have this small powered subwoofer that wasn't being used...so...i figured it was worth a shot

after fiddling with the crossover and phase controls until i figured i had it reasonably dialed in...i sat back to try it out...now up until this point i had usually just been fiddling and sitting quite close to this large radio...now i opened the volume control and sat across the room from it to really listen...a few tweaks to the subs level and radio's tone control, and then letting things warm up for a while...and OH MY GOD..

is it perfect?...hell no,it's mono for one, there are some slight but obvious glitches in the freq response, cabinet resonances etc..but the sound this thing makes while listening to a good FM signal like the CBC...is well incredible...this RADIO is now taking listening time away from my Bryston/B&W rig which it's sitting beside..i kid you not!i've been listening to CBC radio the last couple nights as they've played Jazz and other somewhat eclectic stuff..niether of which i really like, but i am enthralled with how it sounds..when they play vinyl, you can hear every click and down into the surface noise, cymbals and other persussion is alive, voices are liquid smooth and detailed as all get out...and with the sub dialed in to fill in some bottom end and make things reasonably full range,it fills the room with sound!i hear new bits of arrangement and detail in songs i've heard a million times.it's to the point of hearing what the more commercial station's compressors and signal processing is doing to the music....the radio has been restored and aligned and has "high fidelity" emblazoned across the front..and you know,it really ain't no joke!i am blown away by this thing...
