The audio arrangement was typical of battery sets in those days. Audio right off the detector for locals or other strong stations through headphones. One or two stages of audio for DX on phones or for speaker operation. The filaments for the audio tubes would be off until a plug was inserted into the appropriate stage's jack. This was a way to save batteries and hours on the tubes.

When AC operated sets came along in a few years nobody cared about saving batteries anymore and people wanted volume so they tended towards mostly speaker operation.
