In the late forties the FM tuner was offered as an option. FM stations were only available in some metropolitan areas at the time and AM radio was still king. Comedies and drama and big network musical programs were still broadcast on AM. FM grew slowly and did not really catch on all over the country until the mid sixties - early seventies. A lot of early FM was either elevator music or classical. Witness top 40 radio: it was on AM and only started switching over to FM in the seventies and eighties.
