That's how I did those cans, too. It has been so long since I did my 630 that I had to find old photos to check.

These days, I would usually cut the cans at the base, but there isn't much room for cutting there. Use a solder sucker and wiggle things, and you can get the tabs loose eventually. If you lose a tab in the process, it's not the end of the world.
