Several years ago, someone on a camera collectors' forum pointed out an EBay auction for a Polaroid One Step with a starting bid of $10,000. The One Step was a bottom-of-the-line camera that sold for about $20 when new, and by this time, would be seen in thrift stores for a few dollars and on EBay where auctions with $5 minimum bids ended without a bidder.
Everyone on our board laughed, but someone actually met the $10K minimum.
We speculated that the One Step was actually a ruse for some other commodity understood in a circle of traders.

There is a gas station near me that sells new wristwatches from a display and the watches are priced in the $200-400 range. The watches look gaudy, but cheap. I'm suspecting that the actual product is something other than the watch.
