Motorola VT-71 Questions

My VT-71 seems to be missing the bottom cover. If I turn the set upside down I can see the bottom of the chaiss. What was used to cover the bottom and how was it mounted?
I'm fond of the little VT-71. My Dad back the early 1950's in college got one and didn't like transformerless design. So he rewired filled it with all 6v tubes and added a power transformer. Later in the mid 1960's I ended up with as my first tv. Unfortunatly that set is long gone but I found one in good shape but is missing the mask. It's seen alot repair work in that most of the caps have been replaced and it almost works, two pictures but no sound. BTW what the latest devolements on the mask? I did cut a piece of wood to support the front edge of the picture tube.
