That's what I originally thought as well, but I've tried everything from off air, to VCR, to video games and its about all the same story. Since there's a bad case of the bends as well the sync pulses are going away, and the sound remains flawless with no hum or buzz. Whether its due to an actual overloading condition caused by excessive gain or just a sync prob I'm not sure of yet. If I put a 10db attenuator on the vid input of the RF modulator its just fine. I'll live with that for now.
Eventually I'll tear it down and try to make improvements on the sync and possibly look for ways to add a vert blanking circuit. The retrace lines are annoying between scenes.

The video information is getting mixed in with the sync pulses.
I will get it back on the bench after new years. Right now its on to other things, and I can live with it If i use a video attenuator.

yes, it used to have a brass plate that said "The Capehart"
From what I understand, people were always fiddling with the controls and got sick on taking the plate off when the vertical was rolling. Be nice if I could find a plate, but they are fairly rare --and then there are also the strange screws that hold them on.

My photo in post #12 of this thread shows the brass plate. Except for paint, it's identical for the CX-33 chassis Capeharts. The Mahogany-finish sets like yours would have been background-painted a dark brown (just the high-relief details show the brass through). The light-wood sets like mine, The whole badge is brass colored.
I did a fair job of reproducing the brass screws. I'll send you a couple.
