Just Couldn't Resist-'49 Westingtonhouse

I thought i'd introduce the new member of the family, it's a 1949 Westinghouse model H216A. 16" flip-up picture tube. I pick it up Thursday. Working condition is unknown so it will be on the project list. Everything seems to be there. Does anyone know if this would have a channel one?

I wander if it is the same Westinghouse that was for sale at the ETF auction last year since they both came from Ohio? There were a lot of lookers at the one at the auction but it went unsold since they always have more TVs then you can transport home.

I don't know but I will ask Thursday when i pick it up.

That brings me to another question, how are the prices at the ETF? Better than the local antique malls i hope, I plan on going this year for the first time and have been curious as to what goes up for auction. I'm assuming a little bit of everything.

I suppose that they could have made a version of that with a mirror in the top lid (and the CRT stays put below that lid), flip the wires on the vertical coils on the yoke, and you watch the TV in the mirror. Then the CRT doesn't have to move and get shaken around a lot. And it wouldn't be so "in your face" if you left it in viewing position all the time.

They did the mirror trick with the pre-war TV sets.

That Westinghouse ate the ETF last year did not sell, and the asking price was reasonable (though I don't recall exactly what it was). Don't think it is the same set.

I attended the convention a few years back and thought the prices were quite reasonable. I have noticed that in general prices at meets run on the low side with bargains to be had. I think it's because all those radio/tv guys already have most of what they want so unless it is something very rare they will often pass. The time I was there they had some nice electrostatic sets in the auction plus a line of GE locomotives for sale.

I have been to recent ETF conventions, and I'd say the prices are very reasonable. Folks like me, who visit from afar, don't have an easy way to get TVs home, unless you sweet-talk the boss (Steve McVoy) into letting you leave the set there until you arrange for pickup and shipping. So that cuts down the bidding competition somewhat, plus the sellers know they are dealing with a "tough crowd," as at most swap meets :-)

It's a little bit of everything, as you guessed. I'm still kicking myself for not buying a cute little Teletone TV-149 that went for peanuts last year -- but I had sworn I couldn't buy anything new until I completed my unfinished projects.

The usual routine is to have a swap meet on Saturday morning, followed by an auction, then presentations. This year they will also have an auction of items from the estate of a noted collector.

My problem seems to be that I live too close, I'm an hour and a half away near Cincinnati. Close enough to fill the truck up then drive home and unload and then go back to Columbus and fill it up again. My wifes already on RED ALERT!!

For me, even worse. I live about 20 minutes from the museum. I vowed parts and service manuals only. I am out of room, but I know at least two more will find their way to my place.
