The late Zeniths had the knobs captive to the case... there were clips on the inside. Idea was that you couldn't expose metal (a shock hazard) by taking them off. Pull them out as far as you can, pull the chassis out 1/2", and you can pop them off the shafts. Bonus - you can't lose the knobs!

Aw jeez! Now I remember that! Good idea, too; I remember the yelps my older sisters made when they tried to change stations on an old Zenith we had that was missing its knobs....
