Well , i got the two resistors replaced and the three section cap replaced with three individual caps . Replaced the burnt 6ca4 , as well as the two 6bq5 tubes . After word i plugged it in and tried it out . The AM radio worked excellent , however no FM , so i pulled the tuner out and found a bad Fm detector tube as well as a few weak tubes . Replaced those tubes and cleaned controls and replaced all burnt bulbs . Turned it back on and wow , what a nice sounding radio !!!! Really has a nice sound !!!
My next task was the tv . I noticed a few tubes had gone to air , they had that white film on them , so i replaced those tubes . Afterward gave the crt a quick shot with my Beltron . Then i felt a bit brave and wanted to see if there was any life in this tv , so i plugged it in and to my surprise it had high voltage and excellent sound . However it only had a vertical line across the screen . So next i replaced the two vertical tubes , however no changed , next i tried adjusting controls , vertical height and vertical linerity , no change . Then i sprayed the vertical controls with electronic cleaner and tried again . TO my surprise i got a picture . Not fully covering the screen , but 3/4 of the screen . Anyhow its not the greatist quality picture , however at least i know there is life in this set . There seems to be all "Elemenco " white caps in here . I am assuming these all should be changed as well as the electrolytics . Have to obtain a sams 508 and get recapping !!! |

Hi,
Change the Elemencos as well as the electrolytics. The set is a fine one. Also, if this has a record changer it is a Collaro made changer. I would make sure the idler wheel is in good clean condition with no flat spots. The motor will need a little oiling with something like 10W machine oil and the changer gear mech will need cleaning and greasing as well as all pivot points. It's well worth a restore! |

the record changer seems pretty shot . It was dead . I disconnected the leads to the motor and ran 110 to it and it still was dead . The record player definitly had a long hard life . I even checked the trip swith under the platter. I seen a few changers on ebay like this one and i will just obtain one and restore it . Mine has a bad motor and just is in bad shape . THe rubber on the platter is in bad shape to . I think the cartridge is bad as well . However i aint getting to far into the changer till the tv is done . One thing at a time . I already began replacing the "elemenco " caps in the tv with orange drops . Not too many in this chassis .

Sounds like a nice set, I like the Maggies. C'mon Mike show us some pics!! And yes, get the Elemencos out before they start exploding and taking out important stuff. I hate those things, one minute they are fine and the next thing you know, it sounds like you're making popcorn on the HOT!LOL!

help
ok guys , hopefully someone can stear me in a direction to the problem i have with this set . I recapped the entire tv . Electrolytics and all elemeco caps . Tested and replaced all bad tubes . Rejuvinated the picture tube . Also found a centering device from a junk set that fits perfectly on the back of my yoke . It has the same tabs that snap into the back of the yoke . Now i have a yoke which is not loose , fits perfect . The back of the yoke originally had a cover with a centering device which was completly broke or should i say deteriated . The centering rings were just dangling there on the back of tube .Anyhow that seems fine now , except my replacement centering device has 4 centering rings and the old one has only two . I am thinking it should be ok ???? Anyhow i powered up the set and i only get a picture which covers 3/4 of the screen , (vertically) and the height control is at its max . I replaced the height control with a new one, still have same issue . After i fiddled with the adjusting rings a bit ,i got a picture that covers almost the entire screen except i have a 1 inch space at bottom. Then i fiddled with the centering rings again and got the bottom correct but then the top is off . Any suggestions ???? I dont think this could be correct , expecially with height control at its max . My next plan of attack is the put it on the bench i guess and begin doing voltage tests , unless anyone could chime in and give me a pointer where a problem might be .

start measuring resistors in vertical circuit, they may have changed value from old age.
don't worry about whether you use 2 or 4 centering rings on yoke. The 23FP4 and 23MP4 are basically the same. one is 110 degree deflection, one is 114 degree defection. |
