The knob in the second picture has a knurled tip and either pushes in (like a button) and/or twists like a volume adjustment. Maybe a potentiometer?

Do you mean it functions like the quick-disconnect on air hoses? Push in the collar to release the connection?

What exactly are you working on, if you don't mind me asking?
