Philco 48-482
I have one that I want to give to my Son for Christmas, I rescued it from a thrift. 100% complete and original but in awful cosmetic shape.
He is a 19 years old Music Major that adores everything about Radio and I am a broke mechanic that wants to give him something special. I have saved the original finish and this set is cleaning up beautifully. I did have to re-lacquer the faceplate, but the rest came back to life with work and patience. I did a cabinet re-finish on a Philco 57C for a fellow in exchange for having my chassis re-capped. (my skill is in cosmetics, I can only "hang" parts). After the re-cap, a mica cap shorted and took out a couple of resistors. I lost FM and SW completely. I had this issue repaired at a shop in San Francisco. AM is good and strong, but FM quality is poor. I was told I need a precise, by the book alignment before this thing works as it should. The fellow in San Francisco didn't feel up to it. The FM section is such an issue because my Son only listens to Classical Music and there's not a whole lot of that on AM. This set will be a daily player. I think it is sound now, it just needs the fine tuning. I know this circuit is Philco's own baby and can be a pain in the ass. I am hoping I can find someone here that is willing and able to do this for me and who is within driving distance of Concord, California. Please PM me if you can help. I have no issues with paying well for quality and complete workmanship. Regards, Craig |

The 20 page Philco Service Bulletin for the -482 is on my web page: http://www.audiophool.cjb.net/Philco.html
I don't think the Philco FM circuit is the best (though I've never heard one...). There may be a better method of alignment with modern instruments, but the service bulletin gives one method. |

You need the DjVu plug-in from Lizardtech - download it here: http://www.celartem.com/en/download/djvu.asp
