The first thing I'd do is obtain a schematic and check the power supply for proper output voltage(s). Use caution as there is several hundred volts involved here. That will get your attention if you get across it.

If it uses a selenium rectifier, it's possible that it's weak or dead. I'd also replace the electrolytic power supply caps while I was in there. You could also have an open resistor in the power supply.

If all the power supply voltages check out, you could have a problem in the audio circuit. Again, check voltages in the audio circuit as per the schematic. I recently fixed a Grundig console for a guy that had an open primary winding on the audio output transformer.

For voltage checks, an el cheapo digital multimeter (DMM) from someplace like walmart will do fine for now. You should also get a good pencil soldering iron of at least 60 watts. You'll also need rosin core electronics solder, de-soldering braid, a hand held desoldering pump, and various hand tools that you probably already have.
