My day at the TV shop

I will be coming to Texas on presidents holiday weekend. I can get it then. I will need measurements to see if it will fit in my Neon. A pic would be nice.

Sure... no problem. I'll look into it tomorrow and let you know what I find. Seems I recall this set is taller than wide. It may squeeze into a Neon. I'll also see what crt it has. I might be able to find a spare in the shop for you to take with it.

I think I might have been mistaken saying that color set was a Stromberg Carlson 25". It may have been a Setchell Carlson 25". If so, are you still interested???

Curiousity got to me, so I went digging thru my Sams index. Come to find out, I found only one listing for a Stromberg Carlson color tv... Model K-1 in Sams 265-13. I pulled it, and it's a 15" set. I was not aware that Stromberg Carlson made a 15 inch color set in the beginning. I don't recall seeing one of these on any of the websites featuring 15 inch color sets. I guess if anyone had one of these, it would be rare as heck!!!

With this in mind, it would seem that the set I found today was a Setchell... not a Stromberg. In any case, I'll be looking at it again tomorrow.

My 1963 Polara 500 is in hibernation for the winter. I really do not like to drive it much. I am mostly keeping it till I have time to restore it. I do not need some nut making my restoration harder. It is such a rare car and parts are very hard to find. It was my daily driver when I first got it. I have people bugging me to buy it all the time. I am looking at a 1972 polara custom 2 dr hardtop. It has a 400 in it. The interesting option is that it has factory cruise control. My plan for the trip is to get my extra transmission for my truck. My transmission is really slipping bad. It has about 200k miles on it.

I was looking at the K-1 schematic just now... uses FOUR 5U4's in the power supply!

I'll be checking on that set tomorrow... I'll be happy to hold it for you.

Early Polara's were pretty awesome! I knew an old lady that had one. Not sure of the year, but I remember it had the plain looking rear end with two little square tail lights on each side. All of those Polaras were beasts... no matter which year it was!

The ETF doesn't have one. In fact their website has no reference to the K-1 whatsoever, but that doesn't necessarily mean there's none left. I found this brochure at TV history: http://www.tvhistory.tv/1955-Strombe...n-K1-Color.JPG I get the impression it was not among the first sets offered; more like by the time S-C introduced their 15" set, RCA, Motorola etc were already offering 21" sets.

Today, I had a day spent with Polaraman. He made a trip over here to pick up the Setchel Carlson color set i saved for him. We paid a visit to a local friend and bought a truck load of Sams that he and I split up. Then, we made a run to the tv shop.

I showed him thru the attic of the old shop, and then we went rummaging thru the old warehouse across the street. It was great to have another collector come along. Having an extra pair of eyes turned out great for the both of us. He spotted many items that I had missed in the piles and on the shelves. He was like a kid in a candy store! By the time it got dark, we had his old Dodge completely loaded with stuff for the both of us! We nearly had to carry some stuff in the cab with us.

After getting back to my house and splitting the Sams between the two of us, we were able to get some bigger stuff from my garage into his truck. He's back on the highway again to make some more stops around Texas, then will be headed back to Georgia. He should be home by Monday with a full load and a very wide variety of items from here, the tv shop, and his other stops along the way.

I'm not going to tell what his list of items includes... I'll save that for him to do in a few days. Trust me though... he's gonna have plenty to keep himself busy with for a good while!!!

Rich, it was a pleasure having you here! Glad we were able to find you enough to make the long trip worth it!

The photo below is him and his faithful Dodge just before he left here. You can't see all of his goodies... much of the load is behind the two consoles and some even in the cab. At least he still has plenty of room for other goodies he'll be picking up in the next couple of days.

I made it home. The truck is packed with a load of Tv goodies. I had to leave a few things at my garage in San Antonio. The trip was around 2,500 miles.

Had a great day with Charlie. Wished I had more time. The truck is just loaded with my stuff in the picture. We really picked up some good stuff. The tires on the beast were almost flat from the weight. Missed the huge pile in the front of the shop. It was hauled off. We can't win them all.

Here's the Sams folder for the Stromberg-Carlson K-1 15" color set. It was their own design. Notice, in the 2nd pix, the separate lower chassis with 4 5U4G low voltage rect. Set had a total of 44 tubes including 2 6CD6G Horz outputs. 15GP22 picture tube.

There are also some RCA models which have a very long narrow tilt out control panel with all the knobs in a row, plus there are some which have slide controls in them. These tilt-out control panels only seem to be used from 1969-1974.
Some of these sets have a latch on the panel under the handle maybe to help prevent little kids from messing with the controls.
