I think in the case of Heathkit, it was more a matter of can you learn than can you already do it. A fair number of people can follow instructions, but then again a fair number cannot. Every kit started with a little soldering practice and built up from there.

Now, if you want to talk about building from scratch without step-by-step illustrations, I'd agree 100%.
