I've used some images found here, copied to a CD-R, and played back in a DVD player which supports JPEG playback. I can't remember what exactly was on the CD, but I know it had a grid, red, green, blue, and white images, and a dot pattern. Worked pretty well for a low-buck approach. -Jim

You can find lots of color bar generators on ebay, this is one example 290363159609 and most of them go for 10-20 dollars
