I always love regen sets; there's so much you can do with so little and they're a lot of fun, especially using vintage parts the way you did. Wonder if a small cap from the upper phone connection to ground would get rid of the RF in the phone leads. Or a choke, as you said: choke could be a winding connected from just about any little transformer you have lying around. Another thing you can try: glue aluminum foil on the bottom of the wooden board, and connect it to common ground: can help with hand capacity effects, stability. How low can you go with the B+? Lots of them will work OK with 18 or 27 volts.
