Just a thought, albeit not an answer to your problem:

Our thrift stores here are loaded with universal remotes from Dish Tv and DirectTV satellite systems. They have one or two "AV" buttons that are for programming. I currently use one I got for 90 cents to control a Sharp color set and a Philips VCR. It can control 4 things - Satellite Rcvr, DVR, and AV1 and AV2. I'm just using the AV1 and AV2 - and saved a bunch by getting it for 90 cents. Interestingly enough, the directory has a bunch of TV brands listed - and will control my Vizio-el-cheapo-LCDTV.

If you can find one cheap, it might be worth trying for your VCR...
