It looks like the same kind of finish that is on a '54 Sentinel that I am working on-a really thin coat of lacquer, with the base wood stained a very dark purple/red. I guess it was more economical, but it leads to wear like this.

The set is also from Michigan-if that is where the set was originally running, you would have had stations from Canada, Chicago, and Detroit to pick through, even in the early 50's. Plenty of chances to really work that dial.

Don't know if there are any bears living in Michigan...
