That's really interesting, not home made, never seen one either. The style of the little bench is very mid 1920's with the shape of the piece and the decorative appliqués. Can't quite tell from the pictures but the appliqués appear to have an oriental theme? That would go with the trapezoidal shape of the cabinet, all popular then. The finish should be preserved and could be carefully touched up by someone experienced in that. You might query over on ARF on the Antique Radio Discussions section.

That is just a fascinating little speaker. I ran across the following article from a 1927 Popular Mechanics which may give some insight into how it was created.
