RCA's use of 'Domino' resistors
Does anyone know when RCA phased out the use of 'Domino' style CAPACITORS, and went to the more modern cylindrical type? Either in TVs, or in radios?
Capacitors, capacitors, capacitors...that's what I meant to say !! Last edited by hposter; 02-16-2011 at 08:28 AM. Reason: goof |

My Emerson 699 TV had a cathode resistor to the HOT that looked for all the world like a big Micamold cap. I assume it was an original part from 1951.

Domino Caps
Yes, Capacitors--sorry about that!!
Does anyone know when RCA phased this style cap in their TV chassis? |

Harry, those domino style silver maca capacitors were used in sets well after 1960. Have you taken an inventory of date codes on the tubes in the chassis? The can electrolytic capacitors may have date codes, and any part numbers which start with 274XXX are RCA numbers and the XXX is a date code.

60s! those things were mostly gone by the mid 50s. Change them, the ones with more than a few volts applied slowly break down after the set has been on for awhile and cause all kinds of problems. They will recover after the set has been off for awhile. They will drive you nuts

I'm going to make a prediction...just a stab in the dark here...that Harry is not going to be changing any of those.

I don't automatically shotgun all micas as I do paper caps. Once the electrolytics & paper (or molded paper) caps are all gone, I see how the set works, and replace micas on a case-by-case basis if a symptom points to one.
My T-100 plays like a champ after a standard recapping -- with all of the original micas still in place. Your mileage may vary, of course. Phil Nelson |

I had a Philco that required total replacement of all caps, even those dominos. I found out why later after I broke one apart- it was a PIO masquerading as a mica!
