I always thought cascode was a generic term for mechanical tuners with channel detents....Was I mistaken?

It was particular type of RF amp stage using two triodes in cascade (hence the "cascode" moniker), providing high gain at low noise. Twin-triode tubes like the 6BQ7 were used, IIRC.
