The other day I ran into a distant cousin; her father just passed away. She mentioned that he had a valve replaced in '88 (something I never knew) and they told him it would last 20 years. He would have had it replaced again...but he was 92 years old when he passed away! Sounds like you are making the right decisions, and have ALL the right "team" on your side!

I don't remember reading any bragging posts, only that you ride a motorcycle and that you were planning to make a large Sony CRT go "kaboom". I wish you the best with your health and I am happy to hear things are not as bad as thought at first.

Charles, very sorry to hear of your troubles, sounds like it's manageable though.
As for bragging, anyone who thinks you are bragging about being fit is just jealous, we'd all like to be in that shape. As for Hospitals don't forget we have World Famous Loma Linda University Medical Center right here in the I.E. All three of my Step Brothers inherited Marfans Syndrome from their Mother and had to have their Aortas fixed and valves replaced. One has been living with a replacement valve for more than 25 years. |

That's serious and painful surgery, I won't kid you about that. They sawed me open and they told me that my heart was stopped for about an hour while they monkeyed around with my arteries. That was nine years ago almost to the day. (A few months before the first Early Television Convention, I remember!) I was only 48 with no clear indications of trouble other than no longer being able to walk briskly around the block without having to stop and rest. It was more than a few weeks of recovery before I was lugging TVs around again, but I've been happily lugging them ever since. I sincerely wish you didn't need to have this done, but if you have to have exotic surgery, these are good times to be living in; they've gotten very good at this sort of thing. You're welcome to PM me about this f you'd like. --Dave |

Charles,
I know how you must be feeling. I recently had the Grim Reaper in my rearview mirror. One afternoon in February, I found myself short of breath driving home from work. Coffee and the stress of driving on ice and snow got my BP elevated, and I had my son call 911 when I got home. I was given Oxygen and a ride to the ER, where a doctor said I was just minutes away from intubation. I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, and left with 9 meds to take every day for the rest of my life. Now the Cardiologist wants me on the Cath-lab table, hooked up to the very monitoring equipment I was a factory tech on most of my career. Be strong, best of luck, and I'll be rootin' for ya! Einar |

I agree. Charles you worked your ass off, so you should brag! Furthermore as you mentioned its probably your overall health thats keeping your heart problem from being an even bigger issue....so thats something to be proud of too! Glad you are being proactive and keeping an eye on yourself. I wish i was as good about my health as you. lots of people say they are....few really are. |

Charles,
Glad to hear that this serious condition can be corrected and you got that second opinion. I have seen those pictures and I was suitably impressed as my deadlift is only about 315, great job and you have a reason to be proud of all that hard work, I know how much work it is. as i was at the other end of the spectrum being 315 at 5'9" at one time. Take care of yourself and keep us all updated. |
