Sets with an RF high voltage supply (which includes all the early electrostatic sets, but also a number of other early sets) can have interference in their own pictures when the HV cover is off. Sets with flyback HV supplies don't have this issue.
As others have stated, safety and x-rays, however, are good reasons to make sure the HV cage is in place, even if there is no interference.
