I did find a 5X4 listed in the obsolete tube section of my Sylvania tube manual and it recommends a 5U4 as a modern substitute.

The pin-out is different on a 5X4. Otherwise, it's basically the same tube. My Philco 38-116 uses one, where the 37-116 uses a 5U4.
